Every grip sock on the market gets its traction from one of two materials, and the difference between silicone and PVC grip socks decides how the sock feels on the carriage, how it survives the wash, and how long it lasts before the grip starts leaving itself behind on your equipment. If you are choosing a sock to stock at your studio, this is the one materials question worth understanding before you sign a wholesale order.
The short version: silicone is the performance material, PVC is the cost-saving one, and the label rarely tells you which one you are holding. The longer version is below, because your members will feel the difference before they can name it.
What each material is
Silicone is a flexible, heat-cured polymer that bonds into the knit of the sock and stays elastic through temperature swings, friction, and repeated washing. PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is a cheaper plastic applied as surface dots that sit on top of the fabric, which is why it can be printed in fine patterns at low cost, and also why it behaves like a sticker. Both look nearly identical on a shelf, and manufacturers are under no obligation to volunteer which one they used.
There is a materials-health angle worth knowing too. PVC formulations can rely on plasticizers to stay flexible, which is part of why certifications exist for textiles that touch skin. How they wear
PVC dots fail at the edges first. Repeated flexing cracks the dot, hot dryers soften and deform it, and somewhere between wash ten and wash thirty the grip starts shedding, at which point the sock still exists but the traction does not. Silicone wears by slow abrasion instead, keeping its bond with the fabric and its elasticity deep into the sock's life. For a studio, this difference shows up as the gap between a member replacing a sock because she wants a new color and replacing it because it stopped working, and only one of those reflects well on the shelf it came from.
What your members feel on the carriage
Traction on a reformer is about contact area and consistency under load. Scattered dots, whatever the material, concentrate pressure into small points, which is fine standing still and less fine mid-tendon-stretch when the foot is articulating against the footbar. Full-sole coverage spreads the connection across the whole footprint, and silicone's elasticity keeps that connection consistent as the foot loads and unloads. What to stock
